Welcome to the wonderful world of Third Grade. This is such an exciting year. It is a time when children transition from a primary student to intermediate students. Children gain more independence and an understanding of the world around them.
Third grade curriculum is rich and the standards are robust and relevant to the real world.  Students will be introduced to our new Language Arts Common Core Curriculum, Wonders. Students will also be enriched by Challenge 21/Common Core units already developed. Writing is a key part of third grade. Students not only will continue writing narrative text, they will also focus on opinion and informational writing. The core of our math instruction is Envision Math.  This is augmented by problem boosters and several challenge units. Social Studies in third grade focuses on the regions of California. Challenge units have been developed around the regions and the native people who historically inhabited the regions. Third graders study life science, physical science and earth science. Science studies are starting to transition to the new State Standards. We look forward to our study of salmon and steelhead as well as our study of space. Weather may also be a new focus this year. Please know that homework looks differently in third grade. No more "packets." Students are responsible for recording assignments daily. Homework supports what is taught daily.  Reading at home is a key to success in third grade. I have a very positive approach to classroom management! Students will learn about how to earn "Hughes Bucks" and how to keep a balance sheet. Communication is also critical. Look for Weekly Reports, emails and web page updates.
Third Grade Rocks!
