Every parent wants their child to do well in school. Here are some things you can do to help your child have a great SECOND grade year:
Establish a morning routine - Help your child get up early enough so that they don't have to race to get out the door. And make sure that your child starts every morning with a healthy breakfast. When kids come to school hungry, it's hard for them to focus on their work.
Gently remind them to do their best every day - Attitude and effort make a huge difference in 2nd grade and the best results happen when they come to school ready to work hard and have fun learning. If they know that their education is important to you, it will be important to them too.
Help them develop great homework habits - Have a set time and a quiet place for your child to focus on their homework. With after school activities, it might not be the same time every day. Encourage them to do a thorough job and turn in their work when it is due.
Talk to them about what they're learning - Ask them what they learned in school today. And ask them to tell you about their favorite part of the day. Give them your full attention and be easily impressed with their achievements, especially when they show improvement. Your support and encouragement motivate them to do their best.
Read to them, and have them read to you - Help them select an age appropriate book that they want to read and take turns reading out loud to each other. This helps them build reading skills and strengthen their listening skills. Most kids love to do this and you'll enjoy it too.
Establish a bedtime routine - Get them in the habit of going to bed early enough to allow them to get enough sleep. When kids don't get enough sleep, it's hard for them to keep up. Set up a routine of ending their day with low energy activity like reading. If you make their bedtime routine a habit, it will become virtually automatic.
